How ADS Northrift is Transforming Livelihoods One Chicken at a Time

Poultry farming has become one of the most accessible and impactful agricultural enterprises for small-scale farmers in Kenya. At ADS Northrift, we are helping rural households unlock the power of poultry, especially through modern feeding techniques and cost-effective, locally sourced feed formulations.

As the demand for eggs and chicken meat continues to rise across the country, so does the opportunity to generate reliable income and improve household nutrition. However, success in poultry farming depends heavily on feeding practices.  .

Why Feeding Matters

Layers and broilers are bred for fast growth and high productivity. This means their nutritional needs are higher, and any deficiencies can lead to stunted growth, low egg production, and vulnerability to disease.

Proper feeding contributes to:

  • Faster weight gain and shorter maturity period

  • Increased egg-laying rates for layers

  • Better resistance to illness

  • Higher quality meat and egg yield

Yet commercial feeds are often expensive, leading many farmers to cut corners, at the cost of performance.

Affordable, Locally Made Feeds: A Practical Solution

To reduce costs and increase sustainability, ADS Northrift trains farmers on how to formulate their own poultry feed using locally available materials. This approach makes poultry farming more affordable while promoting food system resilience and rural self-reliance.

✅ Key Ingredients for Homemade Feeds:
  • Maize or maize bran: Energy source

  • Sunflower cake or cottonseed cake: Rich in proteins

  • Fishmeal or omena (silver cyprinid): High-quality animal protein

  • Lucerne or sweet potato vines (dry and ground): Green forage for vitamins

  • Limestone or crushed eggshells: Calcium for strong eggshells

  • Salt: For mineral balance

  • Premix (vitamin/mineral mix): Purchased in small quantities to balance nutrients

Farmers are taught the correct ratios to ensure feeds are balanced for age and purpose (starter, grower, layer, or finisher). They also learn how to store feeds properly and introduce feed gradually to avoid digestive issues.

Feeding Tips for Success:
  • 🕘 Feed in scheduled intervals: This avoids wastage and encourages appetite

  • 💧 Provide clean, cool water at all times

  • 🧼 Ensure clean feeding equipment and coop hygiene

  • 🥬 Supplement with kitchen greens (e.g., sukuma wiki, pumpkin leaves)

  • 💉 Vaccinate and deworm routinely to maximize feed efficiency

How ADS Northrift Is Making It Happen

Through organized farmer groups, demonstration farms, and on-site training, ADS Northrift equips poultry farmers with the skills to:

  • Build affordable poultry houses with good airflow and security

  • Select the right breeds for their climate and market goals

  • Formulate feeds tailored to each growth stage

  • Practice biosecurity and basic veterinary care

As a result, farmers report improved income, better nutrition at home, and more opportunities, especially for women and youth. Poultry is no longer a side activity; it is now a respected agribusiness venture.

Modern poultry feeding is not about expensive inputs, it’s about smart, informed practices. With support from ADS Northrift, more farmers are adopting feeding strategies that work for them and their environment. By harnessing local resources, we are building a future where every household can eat better, earn more, and thrive sustainably.
