Mazingira Day, celebrated annually on 10th October in Kenya, is a call to action for communities to care for and preserve the environment. This year, ADS NRR embraced the theme by championing tree planting, establishing seedbeds, and promoting everyday practices such as recycling and reducing paper use. These actions, though simple, form part of a broader strategy to address environmental degradation and climate change in the North Rift region.
Greening Communities through Tree Planting
Tree planting remains one of the most powerful and accessible ways to combat the effects of climate change. By restoring tree cover, communities can protect watersheds, improve soil fertility, and enhance biodiversity. ADS NRR, alongside local faith-based groups and community members, planted trees in communal spaces, schools, and churches, turning previously bare areas into budding green spaces.
Nurturing Sustainability through Seedbeds
Beyond planting trees, the establishment of seedbeds ensures a steady supply of seedlings for future reforestation efforts. This approach not only sustains environmental activities year-round but also engages communities in hands-on stewardship. Local youth, men and women groups were actively involved in setting up and managing the seedbeds, building a sense of ownership and responsibility for their environment.
