Building Resilience in Turkana Through Sustainable Solutions

In Turkana South, families are feeling the weight of climate change like never before. Erratic weather patterns, prolonged droughts, and food insecurity have made daily survival a struggle. As ADS North Rift, we are walking alongside these communities, listening to their challenges and working together to create solutions that offer real hope. By identifying key drivers of climate change,  we have developed contingency plans focused on drought preparedness, water conservation, and sustainable agriculture to help families not just survive but thrive.

Risk Assessment and Contingency Planning

Through participatory risk assessment sessions, we worked hand in hand with community members to analyze climate and disaster risks, identifying drought as the most urgent threat. With their input, we developed a comprehensive contingency plan that strengthens local capacity through early warning systems, climate smart agriculture, and livelihood diversification. We believe that the best solutions come from within the community, and ADS North Rift is proud to support their resilience efforts.

Strengthening Governance and Community Leadership

At ADS North Rift, we believe  that strong leadership is the backbone of sustainable development. That’s why we have trained 105 groups in leadership, group dynamics, and conflict resolution, helping communities organize effectively and take ownership of their development. By building these skills, we are ensuring that local leaders can guide their people toward lasting solutions.

Advancing Agro-Ecological Technologies and Environmental Conservation

We introduced farmers to integrated pest management, mulching, crop rotation, and organic manure use, allowing them to increase productivity while safeguarding their environment. Our land rehabilitation efforts, including the clearance of invasive species like Prosopis Juliflora, have helped communities reclaim their farmland and pasture for sustainable use.

Improving Livestock Management and Expanding Microfinance Opportunities

Livestock is a vital source of livelihood in Turkana, and ADS North Rift has equipped farmers with knowledge on breed selection, pasture management, and disease control to improve productivity. At the same time, our community-based microfinance (CBM) programs have provided financial resources to 30 Common Interest Groups, enabling them to invest in income-generating activities and secure their futures.

Capacity Building and Water Access

We believe in empowering communities from the inside out. Through advocacy and lobbying efforts, ADS North Rift has brought together community leaders and religious figures to champion long-term solutions. Access to water is a fundamental right, and we have identified seven boreholes for rehabilitation to ensure that families have the water they need for both household use and agriculture.

At ADS North Rift, we are not just responding to climate change, we are working side by side with the people of Turkana to build a future of resilience, economic stability, and lasting change for generations to come.
