Celebrating Food Heritage on International Sustainable Gastronomy Day

Food is more than nourishment, it is culture, identity, history, and a connection between generations. As the world marks International Sustainable Gastronomy Day 2026 under the theme “Celebrating Food Heritage,” ADS North Rift joins communities worldwide in recognizing the role of food in promoting healthy lives, preserving traditions, and supporting sustainable development.

Across the North Rift Region, food heritage is reflected in indigenous crops, traditional farming practices, and local culinary knowledge that have sustained communities for generations. These traditions continue to contribute to household food security, improved nutrition, and resilient livelihoods.

At ADS North Rift, we believe that sustainable food systems are essential to achieving wholesome and dignified living. Through our programs, we work alongside communities to strengthen food production, improve nutrition, and promote responsible stewardship of natural resources.

The Food Security and Climate Change Adaptation Project (FOSECCA) has supported farming households to improve food production and strengthen resilience through sustainable agricultural practices and community-based learning approaches. These efforts help families increase food availability while protecting the natural resources that support their livelihoods.

The Grow Enrich Project, implemented in partnership with World Vision Kenya, continues to support communities through nutrition-sensitive interventions, capacity building, and livelihood improvement initiatives. By encouraging diversified food production and the use of nutritious locally available foods, the project contributes to healthier families and stronger communities.

International Sustainable Gastronomy Day also reminds us of the importance of supporting local food producers and preserving indigenous knowledge. Traditional foods and farming practices not only reflect cultural heritage but also contribute to more sustainable and resilient food systems.

As we celebrate this day, we recognize that protecting our environment is closely linked to protecting our food heritage. Healthy soils, clean water, and thriving ecosystems are essential for ensuring that future generations can continue to enjoy diverse and nutritious foods.

ADS North Rift remains committed to working with communities and partners to promote sustainable livelihoods, improve nutrition, and strengthen food systems that benefit both people and the environment.

Together, let us celebrate our food heritage, honour the knowledge of past generations, and build a future where communities continue to thrive through wholesome and dignified living.
