Celebrating World Food Day with ADS North Rift

Every year on October 16, the world comes together to mark World Food Day, a global call to action to build sustainable, inclusive, and resilient food systems. To ensure that everyone, everywhere, has access to safe, nutritious, and sufficient food. For ADS North Rift, this day is more than a commemoration, it’s a reflection of our daily mission to promote wholesome and dignified living through food security and community empowerment.

Empowering Communities through FOSECCA

Through the Food Security and Climate Change Adaptation (FOSECCA) project, ADS North Rift has been working hand-in-hand with communities across the region to strengthen their resilience to climate shocks. By introducing agro-ecological  agricultural practices, promoting entrepreneurship , and supporting diversified farming systems, FOSECCA has enabled farmers to enhance productivity even in the face of unpredictable weather patterns.

Farmers have been trained in agro-ecology, food diversification, soil conservation, water harvesting technologies, and the use of drought-tolerant crops. These initiatives are improving yields, restoring degraded landscapes, and ensuring that families can rely on sustainable food production throughout the year.

Strengthening Livelihoods through Grow Enrich

Complementing these efforts is the Grow Enrich Project, implemented in partnership with World Vision Kenya. The project focuses on enhancing household nutrition, financial inclusion, and community capacity. Through Savings for Transformation (S4T) groups, smallholder farmers, especially women and youth, are gaining access to financial services that enable them to invest in their farms, diversify income streams, and improve their families’ nutritional well-being.

Moreover, Grow Enrich emphasizes nutrition-sensitive agriculture, ensuring that increased production translates to better diets. Households are encouraged to grow a variety of nutrient-rich crops like nyota beans and orange-fleshed sweet potatoes, adopt kitchen gardens, and make informed dietary choices, thereby tackling both hunger and malnutrition.

Community-Led Change

At the heart of ADS North Rift’s work are the farmers themselves, the stewards of land and food systems. By placing communities at the center of interventions, ADS promotes local ownership and long-term sustainability. This approach ensures that the impact goes beyond immediate gains, building resilient systems capable of withstanding future challenges.

A Call to Action

On this World Food Day, ADS North Rift celebrates the incredible resilience and innovation of farming communities across the region.

As we celebrate the joy of food, we invite partners, stakeholders, and communities to continue working together to build a food-secure future for all.
