For many women, pregnancy and early motherhood bring both excitement and uncertainty. Questions about proper nutrition, breastfeeding, and infant care are common, and without the right support, mothers may struggle to access reliable information.
Through the Grow Enrich Project, ADS is helping bridge this gap by supporting Mother-to-Mother Support Groups within communities. These groups provide safe and supportive spaces where expectant and lactating mothers can learn, share experiences, and receive guidance on how to care for themselves and their children.
Meeting regularly within their communities, mothers come together to discuss important topics such as maternal nutrition, exclusive breastfeeding, complementary feeding, and hygiene practices. Guided by trained community health promoters, these discussions help mothers understand how simple but important practices can significantly improve the health of both mother and child.
One of the key messages shared in these groups is the importance of exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of a baby’s life. Mothers learn how breast milk provides essential nutrients that support healthy growth, strengthen a child’s immune system, and protect against illness. They also gain knowledge about introducing nutritious complementary foods after six months while continuing breastfeeding.
Beyond the technical knowledge, the groups offer something equally valuable, community support. Many mothers, especially first-time mothers, face challenges that can feel overwhelming when experienced alone. Through Mother-to-Mother Support Groups, women are able to ask questions freely, share personal experiences, and encourage each other to adopt healthy practices.
These peer support systems help build confidence, trust, and solidarity among mothers. Women begin to see that they are not alone in their journey and that their collective knowledge can help improve the wellbeing of their families.
The impact of these groups extends beyond individual households. When mothers have access to the right information and support, they are better equipped to make informed decisions about nutrition, health, and childcare. As a result, children grow healthier, families become stronger, and communities become more resilient.
Through the Grow Enrich Project, ADS continues to invest in community-driven solutions that empower mothers with knowledge and support systems that last long after the training sessions end.
Because when mothers are empowered with the right knowledge and support, they nurture not only healthy children but also healthier futures for their entire communities.
