Water for Resilience

At ADS Northrift, we believe that every drop counts. In a region where climate change and erratic rainfall patterns threaten food systems and livelihoods, water conservation is not just a practice, it is a lifeline. Our holistic approach to water-smart agriculture is transforming farms into thriving, resilient ecosystems.

Why Water Conservation Matters

In agriculture-dependent communities, water scarcity can mean the difference between abundance and hunger. Conserving water:

  • Improves soil health by maintaining moisture levels, reducing erosion, and fostering micro-organisms essential for crop productivity.

  • Boosts yields and food security, even during dry spells or delayed rains.

  • Reduces dependency on expensive irrigation systems or erratic seasonal streams.

  • Builds climate resilience among farmers and their households.

What ADS Northrift Is Doing

To help communities adapt and thrive, ADS Northrift integrates water conservation practices across all our agricultural support activities:

✅ Rehabilitating Water Sources

We’ve supported the rehabilitation of shallow wells and water points, ensuring communities have access to clean, reliable water. This infrastructure serves both domestic and farm needs, reducing the long distances women and children travel in search of water.

✅ Introducing Water-Smart Farming

Our teams train farmers on:

  • Mandala and contour gardens: Designed to slow runoff and maximize rainwater absorption.

  • Mulching and cover cropping: To retain soil moisture and reduce evaporation.

  • Drip irrigation and water reuse systems: For efficient water delivery to crops.

✅ Capacity Building through Farmer Field Schools

We conduct hands-on learning in Farmer Field Schools, equipping participants with the knowledge and tools to apply water conservation techniques effectively on their own farms.

Looking Ahead

ADS Northrift remains committed to building climate-smart communities by investing in sustainable water practices and agroecological learning. As we scale up these efforts, we invite more partners and stakeholders to join us in protecting this precious resource, because water is the future of farming.
