Building Peace Through Cross-Border Community Dialogue

Peaceful communities are the foundation of sustainable development. At ADS North Rift, we recognize that lasting peace is built through understanding, dialogue, and cooperation.Through the Western Kenya Peace Initiative, ADS has been actively facilitating cross-border inter-community peace dialogues aimed at strengthening relationships and addressing conflicts among neighboring communities.

These dialogues bring together community members in safe, inclusive spaces where they can openly share their experiences, concerns, and aspirations. By encouraging honest conversations, communities begin to understand each other better and find common ground.

So far, successful dialogues have been held between:

  • Mombwo and Oneno Tamu communities

  • Kiptegaa and Owiro communities

  • Chemase and Kibigori communities

  • Potopoto and Kupere communities

These engagements have played a key role in promoting peaceful coexistence and strengthening social cohesion across the region.

To make the sessions engaging and impactful, ADS uses interactive tools such as the Knotting Game and the Working Together Tool. The Knotting Game helps participants visualize how conflicts are interconnected and how they can be resolved collectively. The Working Together Tool, on the other hand, guides communities in identifying shared challenges and developing joint solutions.

The importance of these dialogues cannot be overstated. They:

  • Build trust among communities

  • Provide platforms for peaceful conflict resolution

  • Encourage collaboration and mutual support

  • Promote unity and long-term stability

When communities come together, they are better able to address challenges, share resources, and work towards a common future.

At ADS, we remain committed to fostering peace and strengthening community relationships as a pathway to sustainable development. Through continued dialogue and collaboration, we believe that stronger, more united communities can thrive.

Peace begins with a conversation, and grows through collective action.
