Every year on October 16, the world comes together to mark World Food Day, a global call to action to build sustainable, inclusive, and resilient food systems. To ensure that everyone, everywhere, has access to safe, nutritious, and sufficient food. For ADS North Rift, this day is more than a commemoration, it’s a reflection of our daily mission to promote wholesome and dignified living through food security and community empowerment.

ADS North Rift joined partners and community members in commemorating Global Handwashing Day 2025 in Marakwet West, under the theme “Be a Hand Washing Hero.” This year’s celebrations focused on promoting proper handwashing practices as a simple yet powerful tool for preventing disease and improving community health.

Every tree planted is a promise to the future. This Mazingira Day, ADS North Rift Region (ADS NRR), in collaboration with the Green Anglican Movement, is turning that promise into reality through a series of impactful environmental activities aimed at protecting and restoring our natural ecosystems.

Across the North Rift region, smallholder farmers are the backbone of food production. They work tirelessly to feed communities and sustain livelihoods. Yet, many face recurring challenges: unpredictable weather patterns, rising input costs, and shrinking access to quality seeds. In response, ADS North Rift is championing an innovative yet deeply rooted solution — Seed Banking.

Every year on September 29, the world pauses to mark the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste. For communities across the North Rift, where every harvest, every litre of milk, and every basket represents not just a livelihood but also hope, reducing food loss and waste is a path to dignity and resilience.

Each year on September 21st, the world pauses to reflect on the values of peace, justice, and unity as we commemorate the International Day of Peace. For ADS North Rift, peacebuilding is not only a global aspiration but a lived reality through the Western Kenya Peace Initiative (WKPI), a program that has transformed communities once divided by conflict into spaces of reconciliation and hope.

Across West Pokot County, hope is being stored in the most unexpected of places, carefully dug farm ponds. From Sebit in Pokot South to Masol in Pokot Central, and Asilong in Pokot North, communities are uniting under the Food Security and Climate Change Adaptation (FOSECCA) project to secure water and build resilience.

Across the North Rift region, smallholder farmers are finding new opportunities in poultry keeping, a venture that is both affordable and transformative. At ADS North Rift, we recognize poultry farming as one of the simplest yet most impactful practices that rural households can adopt to strengthen their livelihoods.

Across the North Rift, young people face unique challenges in accessing financial resources to support their farming and entrepreneurial ventures. Traditional financial institutions often require collateral, credit history, or large deposits that many youth do not have. To bridge this gap, ADS North Rift has been championing Community-Based Microfinance (CBM) as a sustainable and inclusive solution.

ADS North Rift has officially launched a new initiative, the Empowering Resilience through Youth and Women-Led Action for Sustainable Drought Preparedness (ERYWAS) Project, with an inception meeting held at Riamakori Hotel, Turkana County. The meeting brought together key stakeholders to set the pace for a project that places youth and women at the heart of climate adaptation.
